Alicia Keys Lights Up Empire State Building with LED Lighting and HIPPOTIZER Media Servers

Alicia Keys flips the switch for the Empire State Building's new LED lighting.
New York, NY, USA -- Grammy Award-winning artist Alicia Keys helped launch the Empire State Building’s (ESB’s) new LED lighting system on 26 November 2012. The landmark building’s first-ever video LED light show, designed by world renowned designer Marc Brickman, is driven by HIPPOTIZER media servers controlled by GrandMA2.

Outputting KiNet to the ESB’s recently installed LED lighting network, six Hippo HDs drive 11,500 pixel-mapped DMX channels to four types of Color Kinetics RGB fixtures located on the building’s top four tiers. Brickman’s design was executed by Programmer Tony Fransen, assisted by Hippo Technician Darien Koop. The show, visible throughout the city and surrounding areas, ran in conjunction with a rooftop performance by Alicia Keys, on a neighboring building as she introduced her new “Girl on Fire “ album.

The pixel-mapping for this show represents a unique development: In a typical pixel-map, fixtures are visible and are viewed and mapped in their real-world locations. In this ESB show, the fixtures are not visible, instead they are viewed and mapped where they throw onto the building, turning the individual illuminated areas of the building into multiple video pixels, and expanding each pixel to HUGE proportions. This effect is consistent across all sides of the building. The show’s pixel-maps were all created by first making one master map in Hippo’s PixelMapper component, which was then split into four separate maps, one for each side of the building.

Ivan Dryer
IMERSA.org announced that Laserium creator Ivan Dryer will be a featured speaker at the 2013 IMERSA Fulldome Summit & Workshops, 13-17 February at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

Laserium was born in the late 1960s and early '70s. Ivan Dryer, then a film maker, inspired by a new multi-colored laser at Cal Tech, first made a film to set the patterns to music and then assembled a team of engineers and artists to design an advanced laser projector in order to produce live choreographed laser shows. Presenting the idea to Griffith Observatory and Planetarium landed Ivan a temporary concession operating permit from the city of Los Angeles, and the first Laserium show to the public premiered November 19, 1973. Laserium expanded to many locations in the United States and abroad and has been experienced by more than 20 million people.

Laserium was important not just in terms of technology but because it introduced a new business model to planetariums - entertainment shows that extended the programming, expanded the audience and provided a new source of revenue. With planetariums now rapidly converting to digital dome video ("fulldome") systems, and science center operators likewise converting their film domes to digital cinema there is new potential for creativity and market expansion, and new interest in the pioneering example set by Ivan Dryer more than 35 years ago.

"The Art & Science of Immersive Storytelling" is the theme of the IMERSA Fulldome Summit, 13- February at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The event isattended by operators, content creators and distributors, producersand vendors serving planetariums, giant screen cinema and themedattractions - all converging markets because of digital cinema. TheDenver Museum of Nature & Science will be the setting for theannual IMERSA Summit, preceded by two and a half days of fulldome(digital dome video) workshops.
Areas of focus will includesound design and audio, cross-platforming from fulldome to giantscreen and vice versa, designing a fulldome curriculum in schools, scripting and story for fulldome shows, and setting up fulldometheaters as multipurpose spaces. There will be a series of curatedscreenings, a Fulldome Innovation Salon for networking, productdemonstrations and content sharing, a Creative Video Lab and theIMERSA Fulldome Standards Committee will address audio as the nextphase of its work. Workshops will range from beginner to advancedlevels.
The Summit organizing committee includes Dan Neafus (Gates Planetarium),Ryan Wyatt (Morrison Planetarium, California Academy of Sciences, EdLantz (Vortex Immersion), Michael Daut (Evans & Sutherland), MarkPetersen (Loch Ness Productions), Mark Slater, Carolyn Petersen (LochNess Productions), Matt Mascheri (Dome 3D), Jay Heinz (MoreheadPlanetarium), Ken Scott (Visual Chaotics), Claudia Cumbie-Jones(Ringling College of Art & Design), Lance Ford Jones (RinglingCollege), Jane Crayton, John Jacobsen (White Oak Institute), PaulFraser (Blaze Digital Cinema Works), Markus Beyr (Attraktion!),Judith Rubin and Karen Roney. It's been a long while since my last post. But I am back and ready to tell you everything you need to know about travel.
I will tell you a story. I had a call from a past customer telling me that the upcoming trip they had booked was a destination wedding and the travel agent the bride had chosen had held no rooms for the guests. In my mind, that is unheard of..but without knowing who the agent was, I made phone calls to find out if any rooms were being held by this agent. The answer was no. The mother of the bride, the maid of honor and many guest were not going to be able to go to the resort. The resort was sold out. The agent they had used was inept.
Did I mention that this was a Sandals resort and when I checked there were absolutely no rooms available. So I did what I do best..I work for the customer..my customers who chose the wrong travel agent for their special day.
I was not going to let them pay for it by having this wedding turn into a disaster.
I was able to find 5 rooms for these customers and they considered me their savior. I am no savior; I am just a knowledeable travel professional who knows what I am doing.
Be careful when planning a very special destination event. Make sure the travel agent knows what she is doing. Make sure you get everything confirmed ..do not take the agent's word for it, or you do can have a disaster in the making.
Hopefully the upcoming wedding will be perfect...
Congratulations to the bride and groom

Portable Brick Oven Features

To contact us Click HERE
I put together an initial web page describing the features of the portable brick ovens that I teach people how to build in my classes. It seems only fair to discuss what's good and bad about my oven designs.

Update 11/24/2012: Just to save you some mouse clicks, note that my oven designs are for ovens that are portable in sense that they are built of unmortared bricks cleverly stacked together. The ovens can be moved by moving the bricks from the starting location to the ending location and rebuilding the oven (which takes less time than you might think, about an hour, less with help). It you are looking for some other kind of portability (what I might describe as a mobile oven), you will need to look elsewhere.

Rabbit's Bakery, Lake City, Minnesota Field Report

One the second day of a vacation at Stockholm, Wisconsin, we crossed the border back into Minnesota to visit Rabbit's Bakery in Lake City. We got there just before noon, so that baking for the day was over, but the wood-fired oven was being heated up for the next day's baking.

There were lots of tasting things in case waiting to be chosen. We saw lots of people coming in to buy things or to have lunch at the bakery cafe.

There was some breads of the day on the rack waiting to be taken, a menu for drinks on the wall. You can also see a sign for pizza (lower right), which they currently make once a month.

They have their distinctive sign hanging outside their door.

Here you can see the chimney stack and cinder block addition for their wood-fired oven. It looks like they also added some additional venting.

Just in case you can't find it going by the address, they also have a distinctive sign on the exterior wall of their bakery building.

Everything we bought was good. I'll certainly stop by again if I'm in the area.

D'Amico & Sons, Golden Valley, Minnesota Field Report

While looking for a place to eat dinner after attending an art exhibition at the Perpich Center for Arts Education I did a "search nearby" and found that there was a D'Amico & Sons location at 7804 Olson Memorial Highway, Golden Valley, MN 55437, about a mile away. Looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor for the restaurant, I saw one where it mentioned "wood fired oven" so that restaurant location seemed worth a try.

This time I didn't have my camera with me, so there are no pictures.

There is a menu that you can download from their page. The actual selections available in the restaurant were a bit broader.

The good news: They really do have and use a wood-fired oven to bake their pizza.

The bad news: They run their oven at a comparatively low 500 degrees or so.

As a result, their wood-fired pizza is just OK.

I ordered their Neapolitan (a highly ironic name considering the temperature of true Neapolitan pizza ovens), which had fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil. The pizza was thin crust, not overloaded, and had a bit of char on the bottom. It would have definitely benefited from some attention from a bubble popper. A couple of big bubbles had pushed the sauce and cheese away from substantial portions of my pizza.

Even with those problems, it was a pretty tasty pizza, and one I would order again.

I also found an older blog post that mentioned Bill's Bread.

His story sounds like a real, down-to-earth guy who discovered his life's work making people's food lives a bit richer.

I'll have to see if I can meet him the next time I'm in Washington.

World's First Powered-Launch Zipline Slated for Las Vegas' Fremont Street

To contact us Click HERE
Las Vegas, NV, USA (November 15, 2012) -- Skyline and Fremont Street Experience announce the creation of SlotZilla – the world's first powered-launch zipline attraction – to be built in downtown Las Vegas. SlotZilla combines innovative technology with a dynamic themed concept to transcend a traditional zipline ride into a ground-breaking attraction for the amusement industry.

Construction on SlotZilla is expected to begin immediately after New Year’s with the attraction anticipated to open during the first half of 2013. SlotZilla will be a major new icon for downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street Experience, a five-block entertainment district that attracts over 15 million annual visitors.

SlotZilla will be a two-level thrill ride. Riders on the upper four ziplines will take off about 100 feet above ground and riders, lying flat in a harness, will be launched to a speed that will zoom them 1,700 feet under the Fremont Street Experience canopy. Riders on the lower four ziplines will take off about 70 feet above ground and zip 800 feet to a mid-point landing platform. Both levels deliver a ride experience unique in the world – flying above thousands of people on Fremont Street Experience and under the Viva Vision canopy, which is the largest video screen in the world with 12.5 million LED lights.

Along with providing a new thrill experience for Las Vegas visitors, SlotZilla incorporates new technology with the power-launch mechanism plus a catch-and-retrieval braking system to bring all “flyers” in with a smooth landing. The attraction will also feature guest flow and ride controls designed to ensure guest safety while maximizing the operation's capacity.

"The launched zipline will provide an incredible experience for riders and is a first for the zipline industry," said Danny Boren, President of Skyline. “Additionally, this attraction will have increased guest capacity as a result of the integrated ride controls and automated safety features, which are exciting new developments for the zipline industry."

In addition to the prone "superhero" style zip from the upper level, guests will have the option of zipping in a more traditional seated position, without a launch, from the lower tier of the tower, which begins nearly 70 feet above Fremont Street Experience.

The new zipline attraction is named "SlotZilla" as a tribute to the deep gaming roots of downtown Las Vegas.

Through the creative direction of Contour Entertainment, the 120-foot-high takeoff tower will be transformed into the World's Largest Slot Machine. Riders will actually “be the jackpot” and exit the slot machine through the pay table and coin tray.

About Skyline
Skyline is the new attractions division of Skyline Eco-Adventures (www.zipline.com), the United States' first
commercial zipline operator. Skyline attractions bring unmatched zipline experience and revolutionary zipline technology to the Amusement & Attractions Industry, and is committed to creating World Class experiences.

InfoComm University Returns to Amsterdam

Fairfax, VA, USA -- InfoComm International's renowned InfoComm University education courses return to Amsterdam next January, as part of ISE 2013’s Education Zone.

Run jointly with CEDIA, the Education Zone will be centrally and conveniently located, as in 2012, in the Elicium Building, with sessions taking place in a suite of rooms above Hall 12 of ISE 2013.

The 25 sessions available from 29-31 January 2013 cover a wide range of delegate needs, with topics ranging from an Update on HDBaseT to AV System Performance Verification and – reflecting the growing importance of professional audio at ISE – Setting Audio Gain.

The program is the result of a Call For Presenters that InfoComm issued in June of this year, which drew a record response from the industry. A selection of submissions from stakeholder groups such as  manufacturers, consultants and distributors was chosen and then combined with sessions led by InfoComm’s own staff or board members.

“The response to our ISE Call For Presenters was the biggest we’ve ever had,” reveals Scott Wills, CTS-D, CTS-I, InfoComm’s Director of International Education and Member Services. “In fact, it was so great that we were only able to select the top one-third of submissions for inclusion in the ISE 2013 program.”

Wills believes it is important to note that the final shape of each year’s InfoComm University program at ISE is determined not by InfoComm staff, but by a European Advisory Group comprising 14 of the AV industry’s leading subject matter experts.

“These volunteers make a huge difference to the relevance and credibility of the program,” enthuses Wills. “The Group has members from the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and the Czech Republic to mention only a few, and these individuals perform a number of different industry roles, making it a very diverse and interesting panel to work with.

“We thank these volunteers for their service and commitment to education and improving our industry, and believe that their input will produce the most insightful selection of education sessions we have ever provided at ISE.”

ISE attendees will save 20% on education pricing if they book sessions in advance rather than on-site, with prices ranging from EUR 85 to EUR 125. InfoComm members receive a substantial further discount.

Sennheiser Envelops Rodin Museum in K-Array Audio

To contact us Click HERE
Philadelphia, PA, USA (November 26, 2012) -- The Rodin Museum is one of Philadelphia's prized museums, and has been run by the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1929. The museum, which contains a priceless collection of 'the father of modern sculpture' Aguste Rodin including "The Thinker," attracts tens of thousands of visitors per year and is not only a landmark in Philadelphia, but also a major international tourist attraction. Recently, the museum enhanced its visitor experience by installing a K-array audio system, distributed by Sennheiser.

Following a major restoration project to its garden and museum facility, The Rodin Museum reopened last September with the new K-array system, which was designed to facilitate background music as well as museum announcements and other public address functions.

Considering the visual and artistic context of the museum, the project team required an aesthetically subtle audio solution that would not divert or otherwise distract attention from the art itself. From a technical point of view, the audio system had to deliver high quality audio to accommodate the program requirements, while minimizing the amount of reverberation that is common in acoustic environments containing smooth walls and marble finishing.
Four K-array KV50s were installed on the walls of the main gallery.
The system was conceived by 3rd Street Services, in conjunction with Jim Fraatz and Steve Keever of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and installed over a three-month period. K-array distributor Sennheiser, along with local AV consultant 3rd Street Services, arranged for a demo of a K-array system — which was ultimately chosen for its outstanding sound quality and dispersion qualities, in addition to its minimalist, small-footprint design.

Four K-array KV50 line array speaker elements, each containing eight 1’’ neodymium transducers, were installed on the walls of the main gallery at about six feet high, accompanied by two K-array KU36 subwoofers on the ground - which were chosen for their compactness and portability.

A similar solution was implemented in the Library, which contains a nearly 30' high vaulted ceiling. Eight K-array KT20CW point source compact speakers were recessed in the vault itself, accompanied by two KU36 subwoofers on the ground — which could be easily removed if required. The entire system was powered by four K-array KA7-7 amplifiers.
The Library features two K-array KU36 subwoofers, among other speakers.
According to Ted Sheppard of 3rd Street Services, the KV50s were selected due to their transparent sound and extreme compactness; characteristics also shared with the KT20CWs. Despite their small footprint, the KT20CWs are capable of distributing audio content at 107 dBs at a frequency range of between 150 Hz and 18 KHz.

From the beginning, the installation performed as expected and only required an additional DSP preset, which was promptly loaded on the KA7-7 amplifiers. The new preset helped align the audio dispersion of the two KU36s, making the system more congruent and even more efficient.

Iceploration, Busch Gardens Tampa
Alexandria, VA -- The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Brass Ring Awards, recognizing the best of the best in the attractions industry, brought hundreds of finalists from amusement parks, water parks, zoos, aquariums, museums, and family entertainment centers around the world to hear the 2012 IAAPA Brass Ring Award winners announced. The ceremony took place in the IAAPA Theatre presented by the Wanda Group located on the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2012 trade show floor.

The tradition of the brass ring in the attractions industry dates back to the carousels of the late 1800s when rings were suspended above riders; low enough to reach, but high enough to pose a challenge. Most rings were made of iron, so grabbing the brass ring was the rare and cherished prize. Skilled riders who grabbed a brass ring earned a second ride on the carousel. Today, the term ‘brass ring’ is synonymous with high achievement in the attractions industry. The top honors are given to companies and individuals for excellence in: marketing, live entertainment, human resources, retail, family entertainment centers, new product development, trade show exhibits at IAAPA Attractions Expo, and new this year, food and beverage excellence. The 2012 IAAPA Brass Ring Awards Winners are:MARKETING EXCELLENCE

AAM Annual Conference & Museum Expo
19-22 May, Baltimore, MD
www.aam-us.org
Theme: "The Power of Story"

Says the American Alliance of Museums: "Museums are great repositories of memorable stories—in our objects and their creators, in our programs and the community members who benefit from them, in our institutional histories and the people who built, developed and continue to sustain our institutions today. But story remains largely an untapped resource for most museums. When it comes to education, advocacy, community engagement, public relations or fundraising, the core story is sometimes poorly told, or even overlooked altogether."

AAM’s 107th Annual Meeting will explore the elements of a great story, the techniques for good storytelling, ways to measure the impact of story on audiences and how to employ storytelling to achieve museums' immediate goals and fulfill their long-term missions as core educational and community institutions.

Cedar Fair Sells San Diego Waterpark to SeaWorld; Knott's Soak City to be Rebranded Aquatica

To contact us Click HERE
Orlando, FL, USA (November 20, 2012) /PRNewswire/ -- SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, the Orlando-based owner of 10 U.S. theme parks, has acquired Knott's Soak City -- San Diego, a standalone Southern California waterpark, from Cedar Fair Entertainment Company.

The park, located just south of San Diego in Chula Vista, Calif., will undergo extensive renovation over the fall and winter and re-open next spring as SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment's third Aquatica-branded park. Both SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio now operate Aquatica parks.

SeaWorld will make significant changes over the off-season transforming the park into an Aquatica: "These parks reflect the highest standard of quality in attractions, entertainment and theming, but the presence of animals makes the experience something truly special. Aquatica San Diego, like its sister parks, will feature guest experiences with a variety of exotic animals," said Jim Atchison, President and Chief Executive Officer of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. "Having animals in our Aquatica parks adds an educational component to a waterpark visit that is both unexpected and enriching."

The first Aquatica opened adjacent to SeaWorld Orlando in 2008. It is now among the nation's most visited waterparks, with annual attendance of roughly 1.5 million guests. In addition to birds and tropical fish, Aquatica Orlando features Dolphin Plunge, the park's centerpiece water slide, which includes an enclosed acrylic slide that allows riders to see animals underwater.

Last year SeaWorld San Antonio unveiled its own Aquatica, with some of the region's best ride attractions, along with displays of kookaburra, spoonbills and southern stingrays.

"When the gates of Aquatica San Diego open for the first time next June, guests will see what visitors to Orlando and San Antonio already know: No theme park company can deliver a waterpark experience quite like SeaWorld," said John Reilly, President of the company's San Diego attractions. "Aquatica will be a great complement to SeaWorld and help us continue to bring value to our guests and enhance this destination."

Aquatica San Diego will be located at 2042 Otay Valley Rd. in Chula Vista, Calif. Terms of the deal, which have been under negotiation for several months, were not disclosed.

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment:
SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment inspires people to celebrate, connect, and care for the natural world through the power of entertainment. The company now owns 11 parks across the United States, playing host to more than 24 million guests a year and provide lasting memories through up-close animal encounters, world-class shows and rides, and high-quality themed attractions.
